Uploading files
The Add data window, file types, and what to do when a file needs attention.
Overview
Uploading is the quickest way to give Mira something to answer from. Drop in a spreadsheet and each sheet becomes a table people can ask about. Use it for files that live on someone's laptop: a budget, a price list, a stock count.
Where you upload decides who can ask about it. At Kestrel Outdoor, Finance uploads its budget on the Finance department's page, so only Finance can ask about it. Where data comes from explains the two places data can live.
Adding a file
- Open your department's Data page and click Add data. You can also drop a file anywhere on the page.
- Drag your files into the window, or click browse to pick them. You can add several at once.
- Check the list. Each file shows as a table with a name you can change.
- Use Choose scope on each table to say which group of tables inside the department it belongs to.
- Click Upload. The window closes and a small notice in the corner shows the progress.
The new tables appear on the department's Data page and in The data catalogue once Mira has read them. You need to be able to manage a department's data to upload to it. Department data covers who that is.
The list of files
Before anything uploads, the window shows what each file will become.
- Names. Click a table's name to change it. Give each table a name people will recognise, such as "Budget 2026" rather than "Sheet1". Every table in the upload needs its own name. Upload stays locked while two share one.
- Workbooks with several sheets. An Excel file with more than one sheet shows as one entry you can open. Each sheet inside becomes its own table, and the entry says how many. Choosing a scope on the workbook sets it for every sheet.
- Removing. Click the bin beside a file to leave it out.
The button says how many tables will go, such as Upload 3.
To swap a table for a newer copy of the same file, select the table on the Data page, open its Details tab and choose Replace file. The table keeps its name and place.
Accepted files
| File | Types |
|---|---|
| CSV | .csv |
| Excel | .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xlsb, .xltx, .xltm |
A workbook can hold up to 50 sheets.
When a file needs attention
If Mira can't read a file, or a sheet in it, the entry turns red with a warning and a Resolve button. Upload stays locked until every problem is dealt with. Click Resolve to see what is wrong and choose what to do.
| What it says | What it means |
|---|---|
| The first row isn't column names | The top row should hold headings, one per column. |
| There's more than one table here | The sheet has two tables side by side or one under another. |
| Rows have different lengths | Some rows have more cells filled than the headings allow. |
| There's nothing in this file | The file or sheet is empty. |
| Too many sheets in this workbook | The workbook has more than 50 sheets. |
| This file type isn't supported | The file isn't a CSV or Excel file. |
You then choose one of these:
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Upload a fixed file | You correct the file and drop it back in. Names and scopes carry over. |
| Send to an admin | The file is held for an owner or admin to fix. Offered when your organisation has turned this on. |
| Have Mira fix it | Mira tidies the file itself. This can take a few hours. |
| Remove from this upload | The file is left out. |
A file sent to an admin waits in Held uploads until someone deals with it.
